CAN A 7 YR OLD CHILD HAVE CLUSTER HEADACHES? I'VE NEVER READ THAT, BUT MY SON HAS ALL THE SYPTOMS, JUST LAST SAT. (JUNE 12, 2004). WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO EAT DINNER OUT, AND HE COMPLAINED THAT HIS LEFT EYE WAS HURTING, I ASK HIM IF IT WAS A HEADACHE AGAIN? HE SAID YES, WELL BY THE TIME WE GOT TO THE RESTURANT, IT HAD WORSENED. SO I WENT TO WAL MART AND GOT SOME MOTRIN, AND GAVE IT TO HIM, THEN MADE HIM LAY DOWN IN A BOOTH AT THE RESTURANT, BECAUSE USUALLY IF HE WILL SLEEP IT WILL GO AWAY, BUT HE DIDNT SLEEP AND IT GOT WORSE, HE COMPLAINED THE BRIGHT LIGHTS WERE HURTING HIS EYES, THEN HE SAT UP AND BEGAN TO VOMIT, I RUSHED HIM TO THE BATHROOM, AND AFTER ALL THAT , HE WAS BACK TO NORMAL, NO MORE HEADACHE, BUT USUALLY HE WILL FALL ASLEEP, THIS TIME HE VOMITED, DOES THIS SOUND LIKE CLUSTER HEADACHES TO ANYONE ELSE. I CANT TELL. HE HAS THESE ONE OR TWICE A MONTH? AND IS IT NORMAL FOR A 7YR OLD TO HAVE CLUSTER HEADACHES? PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN, IM WORRIED.OH AND BEFORE HE GOT SICK, HE WAS EATING A TOOTSIE ROLL POP, I WONDER IF THAT CAUSED THE ATTACK TO COME ON, ITS CHOCOLATE???

Hi Melissa,

sadly, yes - clusters have been known to affect people of all ages, although quite uncommon in children.

What you describe, however, sounds more like migraine - the light sensitivity, the vomiting...migraine pain is very much also "eye-involved" complete with vision disturbance during the aura (or onset) phase.  Migraine pain usually lasts longer, but in children...who knows?  Vomitting is very typical of migraine, although it could also have been the ibuprophen in the Motrin.  As to food triggers, that's quite a controversial subject, but yes there are some people who believe different foods can cause their attacks.

I'd sure get him in to see a neurologist as soon as possible to confirm a diagnosis and get him on some kind of abortive meds.  Oxygen is very safe and also very effective at aborting migraine.  Please consider this as your first line of defense and talk to you doctor about it?

here are some links to websites for children with head pain.

Best of luck to you and please let us know how things are going for your son.

I would agree with Margi.  Unfortunately, whether it's migraines, clusters, or another primary headache, it can be very difficult to diagnose correctly in children.  I've read a few reports that say primary headaches in children can often create symptoms that would not normally be seen in an adult patient (i.e. Singular cluster episodes; Combination of headache symptoms; Secondary symptoms not normally associated with a primary headache).

The best you can do is take your son to a pediatric neurologist, preferably one experienced with headaches, and get an expert opinion.  And don't don't take any crap from the docs either.  If they say, "Oh... It's nothing." Sock the doc in the jaw, and find one that isn't a quack.

Good luck, and thank you.

Yes these have Migraine all over them. However, a Neurologist is what you should get him too.

Good Luck

If it is migraines it could be a blessing in disguise.

There are may ways to avoid triggers,
good medicines to help abort the painful attacks,
and he may grow out of them as the hormones
balance themselves at puberty.

(estrogen is a possbile link to the migraines,
   so dicuss with the doctor....)

Even if it is cluster headaches, don't fret.
With most prevntatives and oxygen,
he can learn to abort the pains and still
live a normal, active life.

Like every one else said.  It is important to see a doctor.

and if possible start a journal to note the time the pain starts and ends, if laying down relieves the pain,
where it hurts andhave him rate his pain from a scale of 1 to 10  (10 being the wrost pain ever)

the journal will help you and the doctor.

if the pains change from just once or twice a month
to more frequent, the docotr could want to change the medicines. so it is best to track every headache from now on.

so good luck and let us know how he is doing!!!!!
