20 years ago the cluster headaches began, and I suffered them for 12 years. When they ceased 8 years ago I felt as if a miracle occurred.

Now they have returned last week.

I cannot go through this again. I am defeated. An axe to the back of my neck is appealing.

does anyone have the name of a doctor, in Manhattan, who knows how to treat cluster headaches?

Go to "where we live" screen and look up those who live near you.  Email them.  Good luck.

Hang in there.  You can make it.  We've all wanted to end it, but you've got to stay strong.  The pain free times are worth hanging on for.  We are all here for you.

Mauskop is definitely the way to go, and I have only seen him once.  I didn't have to ask him any questions or to write any scrips--he answered all my questions, wrote scrips for what I needed, even increased the dose of a med I was already on (which I had planned to ask him to do):  all spontaneously.   He had reviewed my history and knew it when he saw me.  Also, his office staff is very helpful with pre-authorizations, etc.  He really is wonderful.  I cannot recommend him enough.  Seeing him has even relieved some of my feelings of anxiety and helplessness.

No, it's not a headache--it's a Stage Ten Primary Chronic Periodic Idiopathic Trigeminovascular Cephalalgic Crisis.

I'd like to thank those people that reached out to my first message. It's amazing to hear from other people that suffer from this misery. But I've also been re-experiencing the additional misery brought inadvertantly about by "regular" people who have zero knowledge of cluster headache but a lot of opinions.  Everybody has an opinion about "headaches", and an opinion about how strangely I behave during an attack. I have started wishing that I could give them one of my attacks so they would understand. Damn this thing to hell. And damn me as I wait three weeks to see a specialist, and am reduced to crying on the street while walking to work because the pain is so ------ unbearable, and all I want is to bang my head against the side of a building to make it stop.

Sorry for the rant folks. But that's just the tip of my frustration, and anger, and misery, and fear of the next attack.

    Jai,
WE UNDERSTAND. I am new to this site, but I've had these headaches for years and the worst part for me is those who do not understand. I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone, but I wish there was some sort of evidence I could show my boss. Something which would demonstrate the intensity of an attack.
Most important, find a place inside your own head where you can go during an attack. If necessary make one, use visualization and concentration, and try your absolute best not to take it out on the rest of your body. Before I found this site I just took thousands of mgs of Tylenol and endured for up to four hours sometimes. I had to find a way to make it, and there is a way. Be stronger than the headaches. Don't focus on the pain, try to set your body in a pattern, like pacing the floor or rocking in a chair with your hand on your head and concentrate on something else. Whatever you have to do, keep fighting through, and we'll be here waiting for you.

I had to wait a total of 3 months to see a specialist...could have been worse.  Hang in there!

Try melatonin at night, it's cheap and just may help.

You are not alone, and that is a comfort to many of us here.  I also agree: try the melatonin, it works very well for those it is effective with, and if it doesn't work at least it's cheap to try.

Instead of getting exasperated with well-meaning but ignorant people who advise you how to treat "bad headaches" either come here or visit with a headache specialist versed in cluster.  Hopefully by working together we can help defeat this stupid affliction for the next generation!

I usually tell people I would rather have them saw my leg off with a chainsaw very slowly than to have these headaches. Smiley
