Verapamil may take a few weeks before you notice results from it.  It varies from person to person.  The main side effect you will most likely see with it is constipation which is dosage related.  I am currently at 480mg/day and I don't have any problems at all with it, although it still is not helping the CH.  I have not used prednisone since I am chronic, but many who post here claim immediate relief that "normally" lasts until the taper is finished.  There have been some who have aborted cycles using prednisone in conjunction with verapamil.

Best wishes for you!

didnt do the taper this time..  got myself some verapamil ER 120mg(one-a-day)  and an anti inflamatory nsaid called naproxen 500mg twice daily(generic name for naprosyn).

1-2 days and the beast was only muffled
2-3 days and he missed a couple of appointments
(note: right about here i dbl'd my verapamil dosage to 2 per 24hrs, usually 9-11 hrs after)
3-5 days had him knockin on my door alot but apparently i only answered once or twice a day, usually in the morning when my verap would be lowest.
5+ days he was there in the morning, and quite muffled (no screamers) imitrex killed him and i was good to go for the day.

new years eve - 24 hrs after my last imitrex, I took matters into my own hands and a cup of tea later...  he was gone for good.  two more cups of tea strategically placed during the past 14 days, and i really dont think he's around anymore...  i think he's at my neighbors house.

hope this helps you.

14 days PF !

I'm interested in knowing the info too....as much as you have.  Only on the verap not the pred.  I just started 240mg 3 times a day.  So far, from before the hospital, I have fewer attacks but they are more severe.  I've been on 240mg of verapamil for a long time, but the dose was tripled to see if it would help the CH.  I'm not having much luck yet, but I've only been on this dose for a week or two.  I guess we'll see!

Tip:  if verapamil makes you constipated, take magnesium.  It will counteract this side effect and then some!

Prednisone works within 24 hours for me (starting at 60 mg and tapering after a week or so).

Verapamil takes a week or so to kick in. I usually start them both at the same time, using the prednisone to attack the beast right away while the verapamil builds up to theraputic levels.

I've taken Pred and stopped the beast cold the first night but once I started tapering down it was back to hammer time. IMO a few pf nights isn't worth the risk. There can be some nasty side effects.
As for Verapamil I have no opinion other than I was on 480mg and it lowered my bp and constipated me. I couldn't really tell one way or another if it affected my ch's so I tapered off that as well.
good luck

Prednisone helped me immediately, but when I tapered off, the beast reared its ugly head.  Don't know about verap, because Dr won't give it to me.
