I'm on day 3 of this years round of headaches. I've been under attck from about 1am-3am, but last night was different. Before going to bed at midnight, I took a Vicadin.

The headache did not come at 1am as expected, but hit me instead at about 7:30am. (I'm still experiencing it, although it seems more mild than usual...hey, I'm able to type!) This is the first time I've had the headache in daylight.

I'm not advocating Vicadin...just wanted to share this unexpected experience. My headache still sucks, and I still want to poke my eye out so I don't think the drug had anything to do with pain...but I'm wondering if it caused the headache to be delayed?

Mikey,

I'm not sure if the vicodin delayed your headache or not, but I will tell you that you don't want to go that route... Vicodin is a very addictive medication, and I have found that it does nothing for my cluster pain...it could help the shadows a bit, but it's not worth it.  It can also cause rebound headaches, which is the last thing you need.  Try taking a dramamine (sp?) before bed - it may help you sleep.

Good luck,
Chris

I have been taking vicodin and oxycodone for 5 years as an emergecy abortive and for shadow pain.  I haven't had any problems with rebound ha.  I think it can help eliminate or lower pain.

I've noticed with most methods I try, even with the oxygen I get rebound pain. My headaches want to come out whether I like it or not.  Angry

Ihave used lortab and Vicadin at times. Depending on the cycle it helps with the shadows and takes the harder edge off sometimes.....sometimes. I have experianced no rebounds as with Goodys or Tylenol. I also had no trouble with it becoming habit forming however, I never used them on a daily basis.

While on vacation this summer the Ch's hit. Second day of the vacation. I made it through the rest of the week with only Vicadin. I had a mixture of 500's and 750's with me on vacation. THey were suppose to be in case the kidney stone moved. THe Vicadin won't do much for the Ch's but they will keep you high enough that your not aware your in a lot of pain.

May not be a good route to go down, but when your out of town and its all you have, use it.

Vicodin is definitely not the first choice for Cluster Headaches. I don't think one Vicodin would stave off a Cluster for 6 1/2 hours. It may have just been a coincidence. But, if you feel it helps, even the shadows and your taking it as directed, it definitely will bring your pain to a minimum.

Addictive-Most reports put the addiction rate for people in pain who take opioids at somewhere between 1/4 and 10 percent. Probably falls somewhere in the middle. But it's still rare if taking it as directed and for pain.

MikeyW,

Way back when, I also tried the vicodin thing.  Sounds familiar.  That's what happens my friend, and if you keep taking the vicodins throughout the cycle, by the end of your cycle the attacks will be all screwed up and so will you.    Smiley

It may feel like it's "helping" in some way, but in the long run, it messes ya up WORSE! ;D

I used to pop a vicodan b4 anticipated attack, then feel all smug when regular attack seemed not to happen, only to be sobbin me achin head out later when UNANTICIPATED attack hit the jackpot. ;D

The pain pills mask and procrastinate and finally just plain don't work.

Be careful Smiley  Best luck!

I am going to echo Kim's post.
For me the narcotic route was short lived. They are too addictive and ineffective my pain. The Triptans are the only drugs that have really help my HA.
There are non narcotic preventive meds that would be better and truly get to the source of the ghosting instead of covering it up, as narcotics do.
For non Cluster pain I am all for Demerol, but when I get a Kip 7 gimme my Imiterx STATdose NOW.
Have a nice day. Smiley

I too echo Kims post.  Only with me, the Vicadin made me sick.  So I had the Cluster (untouched) and was sick as a dog.  Not a good combination.

I never touched narcotics for CH again.
