Apocalypse Redux (New Ellen Drawings)
Jun 1st, 2008 at 8:08pm

Ellen finished her piece on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.  She used as inspiration medieval images of the same subject, along with her interpretation of the Revelation of St. John the Divine.

It's arranged to represent a shield.  The panel on the upper left is "War", the one on the upper right is "Plague", the central panel is "Death", and the bottom panel is "Famine".

The media she used were colored pencil, gouache, and black and metallic ink.

This last one is a charcoal drawing she did as a class assignment.  From a photograph.

Thanks for looking, folks.  She really enjoys showing her work to my CH family.

All the best,

George

Beautiful work! The portrait shows diversity in her abilities from other work you have posted. I can't wait to see where she goes with this talent. How do you think she got so good??? Inherited talent, someone in your family a great artist?? Good teachers? Lots of practice? All of the above? I love to figure what makes talented kids so good. My expereience with my students is it's often genetic. Keep posting her work!

El's had some very, very good teachers.  And lots of practice.

Don't know whether or not it's genetic, Charlotte--neither Liz nor I have a lick of drawing talent.

My mother paints, though--and Liz's uncle Alden was an artist by profession.

An oil painting by my mother of Ellen when she was small:

An ink drawing by EJ's uncle Alden:

So...who can say, eh?

Wow.  Would it be wrong to say I like War, Plague, Death, and Famine.  Sound really weird anyway.  That first War part is still my favorite in the shield.  The charcoal is terrific.

Very nice talent in the family past too, George.  The portrait is a beautiful one capturing that smile but I'm drawn to the way sunlight is done so well in what looks like an entrance to an inner courtyard in the detailed ink drawing.  Very good!

Oh and George, I'm pretty sure that artistic ability IS genetic.  Seriously!
