Welder's O2
Nov 20th, 2008 at 12:13pm

A few years back when my husband first got onto oxygen, I remember seeing some discussion here on whether welder's oxygen was safe or not. Thinking about trying it now, does everyone now feel that it is okay? Seems like quite a few people are using the welder's tanks, from what I am reading here. Thank you!

JMC,

There is absolutely no difference between welders and medical oxygen! They come from the same bulk fill station.

The tanks and regulators are different and to be safe you should make sure that the tank has never had any poisonous gasses in it. C02 and nitrogen are OK.

I hope this answers you question. Wink

Roland.

I just finished breating quite a bit of the welders 02........I survived.

Seriously, It is safe.  Many on this board use welders 02 and I've not heard of anyone having ill effects from it.

I concur. Although I found the second tankful drier and more irritating than the medical stuff I'd used prior. So I think that with welder's, and others can weigh in on this, an aerator/bubbler is even more necessary. Of course, I also live where the air is very dry....  if you can actually call it air we breathe in LA.

Thats all very helpful, thanks! I think we'll keep up with the medical e-tanks for the truck and office, and try to get a big honkin welder's tank for home. It's so nice to have all this advice available!

Funny too, we are getting to educate the doctor about clusters. I faxed over the article indicating regular-release Verapamil worked better than slow-release in some cases, and they were willing to give it a try.

Have you gotten a second opinion on that?  Grin

I am one happy camper since switching over to welders O2 this year after buying medical O2 for so many years. My rented T tank holds roughly the amount of (14) E tanks and costs $18.75 to refill/swap at my local auto part place here in Central Texas. Annual lease on the tank is $45 or $50. (NO, they don't know that I'm breathing it)

No more fear of running out and I refill my smaller tanks myself for going mobile.........  Grin

Caution: Anyone filling their own tanks needs to REALLY read up on how O2 reacts to contaminants – keeping your equipment clean and oil free is critical. Nothing complicated or difficult, just learn what you need to do.

A doctor who is willing to listen and is open minded enough to read what you bring him....that's a doc worth their weight in gold!!! Hang on to him/her!!!

Ha, it's actually a PA we ran into a few years ago when we had run out of Imitrex and had to go to an urgent care center on a Sunday. Her dad has clusters, so she takes this seriously! That's when we were able to get oxygen, prednisone and verapamil, and she is always willing to read what I print out from this site.

Welcome handranman. In fact, you've educated ME with your post. I have a welder's tank that I bought and have had it filled a couple of times when I was in cycle in June and July. Didn't know you could swap them out though!  Thanks for that.

Wishing you well and plenty of non-pain

If you use welders ox, how do you go about getting the proper regulator?

Lacuna, when I bought my tank I also bought a standard welder's regulator. This measures PSI and not LPM, but you can crank it up to any output volume you want and it works just fine.

Others can probably help you better in finding a regular breathing regulator. Good luck!

My brother is in need of oxygen, but has no insurance and no way of getting a prescription for it.  We live in the Austin, Texas area.  Does anyone know where and how he can get the welder's oxygen.  Also, how do you know the tank hasn't had any poisonous gases previously?

It is so hard to see him going through this...I wish there was something more I could do to help him.

Nice to meet you and I'm glad he's doing a bit better now. Oxygen is my first line of defense every time!
