Beta-Blocker
Jan 19th, 2009 at 4:49pm

After my first visit to a neurologist he put me on a beta blocker called propranolol HCL, ive not had the cluster pain since, that was on 9th decemer. I still feel a cluster trying to come on,eg: very light shadows which last 5 to 30 minites. But they have never gone anywhere, this includes when iam having a few drinks. Its only been six weeks but just though i would shear this.

It's high blood pressure medication.  I would get some oxygen and a real neuro.

Hi Dazza,

1st I'm glad you've found some relief.

Propranolol is not a main line CH drug.  The typical approach uses calcium channel blockers like Verapamil instead.

Is it possible that your cycle just ended on it's own?

Either way, I'm glad you've found some PF time.

Where there is Oxygen, you must use proper caution.
So be safe, don't smoke while using O2. Kill the pain and not yourself.

This is an OLD line med used for migraine. Some 30-years it was still used for cluster but has long disappeared from standard treatment lists because new meds are more effective.

If it works for you then your fortunate but I'd print out the list of current treatments (earlier message) and share with your doc.

Thanks guys propranolol wasnt my drug of choose when i walked into the neurologist, i went in armed with all my research on oxygen, imigran, verapmill and alike and he didnt want to know. We actually had quite a heated argument, he said we dont want to abort the attacks we want to cure them(ask your self).  I live in new zealand and the cluster mask i ordered had all ready arrived. He did give me maxalt to take if i have to. Well maybe my cycle did finish at the same time as i started takeing propranolo, if so that was my shortest cycle eaver 14th nov to 8th dec, that was after 14months pain free. The first cycle i had lasted 3 years with a week or two pain free every now and then. So any way i will keep takeing the drug along with my actual high blood pressure meds bendrofuazide while things are good.
