BEING REALLY COLD AFTER A HIT
Apr 24th, 2009 at 10:19pm

It has been a few days since I have posted anything but I have a question related to something i have alluded to before.  I have been in cycle since January 29th and in the beginning I would get really hot when the hit started and then feel cold when it was over for a couple of hours.  What is happening to me now is I still get really hot when the hit begins but afer the hit is over I feel like I have camped out in Siberia.  This deep cold feeling stays with me just about all day now instead of for only a couple of hours.  I started taking 6mg of melatonin at the advice of Emjay or Chuck since I have the hits at night.  Could the melatonin have anything to do with the cold feeling staying with me for so long and does anyone else experience this cold feeling being longer the longer the cycle goes?

I become very cold after a hit but it only last's for about an hour. Everyone is different so you may be having the same only longer.

Being cold can be a sign of constricted veins from Imitrex or any vasoconstrictor.

I don't take imitrex or use prescription vasoconstrictors, but I'm invariably overheated during a hit, and very cold afterward for an hour or so.

The hypothalamus is involved in regulating body temperature.  I suppose that has something to do with it, since ours are messed up.

Best,

George

I was wondering if it was just me.  I sleep with it cold in the house, and sleep very lightly dressed AND keep fans on me. But after a hit I put on shirt and pants and Big winter socks and get under the covers. Im still freezing.  That is with or without the Imitrex.

Since i like it so cold when i sleep my girlfriend has always told me that my hippopotumus is messed up...Its my first cycle in the time that i have known her (three years).......now she knows she was right. My hippo is screwed up Sad

The abortive I use is Zomig nasal spray.  I haven't thought that it may be causing the cod feeling.  Maybe that is what is making me feel cold but it seems the longer the cycle goes the longer I stay cold after a hit.  My wife says my skin even feels cold to the touch.  This is a strange bird and hits us with more than just the pain.  Thanks for your input.  Does this happen to most all CH'ers?

This is all very weird.  About 2 years ago I started noticing just the opposite!  About half an hour BEFORE an attack I start getting extremely cold, to the point of shivering.  Now I know that this is my warning sign.  But I still just think that I'm cold because it IS cold, until I realize it's just me.  It probably IS related to the hypothalmus, just another way we are all different.

I generally cannot stand the heat, I sleep with the air conditioner on in the winter (Hey, I'm in Texas, can you BLAME me?) and USED to take cold-only showers...

Right before my cycle started, I noticed I was feeling cold all of the sudden. This was weird, my family still thinks it's damned strange. I'm more prone to feeling hot when it's NOT hot out...

Sometimes I end up with a hot flash, or cold right before a hit now. It just depends. The weird thing?

When I first started the 02, I'd get INCREDIBLY cold while doing it. I'm guessing that it has to do with the effect the oxygen is having on our hypothalmus,

As far as I'm concerned, cluster busting has been the best treatment I've tried. No migraines since I started it, and my hits have gotten so much better. Wanna know more?

I know this sensation very well too. I'm hot and sweating during most of the hit, and very very cold afterwards. I don't know how long that lasts precisely, I've never timed it. But I think it never lasts longer than 60-90 mins. Sometimes even shorter. But never an entire day.
I use O2 as an abortive, and Imitrex as a backup. I too think the hypthalamus may be responsible, rather than the abortives I use. But that's just my wild guess.

Thanks for all the replies but I had two hits last night, one at 1:00 AM and another at 4:00 AM and I have been cold most of the day.  It is 85 degrees here in north Alabama today but I still feel cold.  From everything I've been reading, I tend to agree the coldness must have something to do with our hypothalamus.  I am usually a hot natured person but this coldness is a strange thing for me.  I've been in this cycle for about 11 weeks so maybe it will end soon.

The chills do have something to do with the hypothalamus and the production and regulation of serotonin. Serotonin is a precursor of melatonin and the added doses may be screwing up your metabolism as the body tries but doesnt need to produce more because the process has been short circuited so to speak. I dont think it has anything to do with blood flow constrictions etcc. but with what flows in your blood

A suggestion try a few days of an extreme protein meal like eggs fried with lots of butter topped with cheese and meat. Seems to send the chills away and equalize ones metabolism and serotonin production, use and reuse in due time. what have you to lose. Might gain some pounds though.

Or you could just quit taking melatonin supplements and see what happens.

Boy have you kids given me food for thought --just when I think I'm a "normal" person with a few "quirks" you come up with things I've got going on that I think is just "ME"....

Ok, I get cold (thought it was just normal me), but with a twist... I sweat (especially my eyebrows) while I'm freezing. I really can't stand heat in the house (people wear overcoats in the summer when they visit).

I've really never thought much about it - I get cold - I put on a long sleeved shirt - I get hot - I take it off. But I keep the house COLD. If it gets WARM - I get hit.

But the sun doesn't bother me (I wear sunglasses outside, but other than that - sun doesn't bother me) - I usually get a good suntan in summer - go to the beach and all that stuff without getting hit (most of the time).

I think we're all just "strange" except ME and I'm perfectly NORMAL - (I don't have to go back to the "home" till Thursday Wink )

Hugs BD Kiss
