Just starting topamax...any advice??
Jun 4th, 2009 at 5:51pm

I have dealt with the beast for 24 years now, but new to this site. So thankful I found it. Now I can get advice from real people who know what I am talking about and what I am going through!!! They just started coming back again this month after 1 1/2 years of almost complete freedom!!! Tried soooo many different things for preventers that didn't work or stopped working. Lithium was the latest but caused me way too many problems in other areas...thyroid condition, HUGE weight gain, tremors, continously sick, but it did help keep the beast at bay for a while. Now I just started topamax last night...one of the only ones I havent tried in the past. Does anyone out there have any experience with this one that you can share with me please?? dosage, side effects, DOES IT WORK??? I read all about it including reviews but most have nothing to do with our issues...PLEASE HELP!!!

I used it for a few weeks then discontiuned because of side effects. For me Topomax caused memory loss and inability to concentrate. I am an electrical engineer so the nature of my work requires me to have a functioning brain. Some here call it "Dopeymax".

It works different for some people so good luck.

Brenda,

If you're not presently using oxygen therapy, see your doctor or neurologist for a prescription.  Oxygen therapy is safe and has no side effects.  If it's used properly at a high enough flow rate, it can be very effective in aborting your cluster headache attacks.

See "Obtaining A Prescription For Oxygen Therapy" , on New CH.com Forum for the "How To". To view it, click the link below:

Take care,

You love lots of things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, that’s as lovely as a great airplane. If it's a beautiful fighter, your heart will be ever there

O2 is a great abort and I swear by what Batch said.

I take topamax and have since 99. My regular dose is 100mg at night (but during a "high cycle" I sometimes up the dosage). I've not had the side effects that others have had. A little memory loss (but I'm old) - I write post it notes. I'm an accountant and it hasn't really affected my work. I take the whole dose at night and nothing in the daytime, so if I have any side effects - I guess I sleep them off.

When I started taking it, I was a basket case and the effects were almost immeidate. My headaches just stopped for a while. I still get hit, but NOT anything like I was getting hit when I started taking it. A few years ago I decided to get med free and quit taking it and things went good for a few months and then WHAM! So I don't think I'll be getting off it for a long time to come.... in fact my neuro has a written statement from me to use a BASEBALL bat if I ever decide to do something like that again.

For me it works.

Hugs BD Kiss

thanks so much for that. so far no major side effects...only on it for 3 nights though!! a little nervous from some things I've been reading because I am going to school now for accounting...just made the deans list for the spring semester...definitely want to do it again in the fall!! I see my doc again in 1 1/2 weeks to check on progress of this med so I'll talk to her about O2. Thanks to you, Batch and others for info.

It works fine for many people. But if you feel yourself feeling "dopey", at least it wears off fast.  Smiley

Congratulations on making the Deans list, no small accomplishment! Smiley The thing with side effects is they're not universal! Hoping it continues to help without any of the "annoying" side effects. And do check out the 02 info. 31 years of the beast and it's still my front line and most effective abortive.

Welcome to theboard.
