Vitamin D deficiency
Jul 31st, 2009 at 5:42pm

Hi

I just want to share my experience after taking vitamin-D supplement for 5 months. I started with 35 ug (1400 IU) pr. day and increased the amount to 100 ug (4200 IU) 1 month ago. My chronic pain in my neck has gone, some eczema in my right ear has gone, my energy has increased and the most important is that I didn’t get the period of CH I normally have in April/May.  Smiley

Regards Niels

My vit D level was very low about 2 years ago. After a blood test, my doc put me on 1000 units, then after 3 months, 2000 units of Vit D. I added calcium, and a few other vitamins.

After the second 3 months, I noticed I had more energy, the depression over me lifted and some pain I was having decreased somewhat. It really made a difference. I haven't noticed my hits decreasing though. I still take between1300 and 2300 units per day. Glad it worked for you.

Monty posted a couple of interesting articles about vitamin D, and the difference between getting sunlight, or taking a supplement. Was interesting reading.

Also, sunshine = Vitamin D. Inadequate sunshine can lead to vitamin D deficiencies.

Dr. Oz says (gotta love that guy ) that most people in the northern states are chronically low on the big D every winter. After all- who's going to be spending more than a few minutes outside when it's 15 degrees and the wind is blowing 30 mph- unless they have to.Certainly not with skin exposed anyway, so take your D every day 1000mg and be happy.

1000 IU (not mg!) is more than most people get and would thus be an improvement, but it is probably too little for optimal health unless one gets lots of sun every week. I take 6000 or 8000 IU a day. The real 'right amount' is based on getting blood levels up to 50 or 60, but few doctors bother to check.

UC-San Diego has some good videos on vitamin D:

The outer boundary of what we currently believe is feasible is far short of what we actually must do.

And if you do not add additional calcium inputs the extra vitamin D supplements are of no use as they will not be absorbed... consult a physician.

Most everyone here in Canada is very deficient in vitamin D.

I believe it's the other way around--calcium needs viamin D to be absorbed, but I agree about consulting a physician.  Malabsorbtion of vitamin D can be, in part, from the inability to absorb dietary fat.  From an informative government page on supplements:
Quote:
As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D requires some dietary fat in the gut for absorption. Individuals who have a reduced ability to absorb dietary fat might require vitamin D supplements
