My new coffee maker...
Nov 9th, 2009 at 10:57am

makes my coffee taste like CRAP!!!!

All I can taste is plastic!  It's terrible!  I don't know if it is because of my super sensitives senses due to my cycle or what.

I've run two pots of coffee through it and just plain water.  Any suggestions?   I NEED MY COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!

Fill the tank to capacity with vinegar, run it through, then rinse it with three batches of water, filled to capacity.

You might want to get a small package of Starbucks Via (instant) for just such times - while you're waiting for it to clean.

Thanks, Bill.  I'll try that.  I'm ready to eat a handful of coffee grounds!

You could make cowboy coffee on the stove. Few scoops of coffee in boiling water, let the grounds settle and pour carefully.

Ditto what Brew said about the vinegar.  Always do that when getting a new pot.  Also, if you do decide to make cowboy coffee, put an eggshell in with it, they help to bring the grounds to the bottom (or something to that effect.  My aunt always did this when we roughed it camping).

Ditto Ditto on the vinegar. Also ditto on the eggshell, Mel. My grandmother used to put eggshells in coffee all the time...even in her percolator.

Dilute the white vinegar( 1 /2 Cup---8 cups water)---If you use too much white vinegar--The coffee will be awful!!!---( Run the cycle three times with pure water--NO MORE VINEGAR)

Scott - We've been running full-strength vinegar through ours every few weeks for like 27 years. What does diluting it do if you rinse it three times afterward?

Well, Jeannie? Did it work?

I'll let you know in the morning.  For now, I dug out an old mini Mr. Coffee that Randy and I got back before we were married.  That thing is over 20 years old and it still worked!  It only makes four cups at a time though.  ( Only makes two in my giant mug. )

I ran what vinegar I had in the house through it.  I can still smell that plastic smell.   Next time I'll stick with Mr. Coffee instead of buying a maker that LOOKS nice!

You didn't answer my question: What good does diluting it do if you're rinsing it three whole times?

I would contend that it does no good whatsoever. Full strength vinegar is going to dissolve more of what makes coffee taste bad, and three rinses takes the vinegar taste away quite nicely.

I'm not thinking about baseball yet. We'll see what they do with the cap money they free up over the next two months, then I'll start thinking about expectations.

Me too with loving my Bunn - 10 years old and works as well as the day we got it.  Nothing like a cup of HOT coffee in 3 min.

Plus it has this really cool little spring thingie that you can clean out all the gunk that makes coffee taste bad Smiley

Vinegar is for cleaning out mineral deposits.

The next new rig use baking soda, it takes out flavors and smells of the plastic.

I love my Bunn too!  It is over 10 years old and I thought the heater was going out, then John took it apart, cleaned everything and when he put it back together, it worked like a charm. Smiley

Glad your coffee is better today, Jeannie

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Bunn coffee makers all heat the pot from the bottom? I'm much more fond of brewing into a thermal carafe so the coffee isn't heated after it's brewed.

Maybe that's just me.

I bought mine cause it was pretty!  Yep... I'm a loser!

Jeannie

ETA: What kind of coffee maker do you and Pat have, Bill?

I really thought that they all had hot plates on the bottom.  Maybe I should read the features instead of relying on a coffee makers good looks!  LOL!

We have a Cuisinart, 12-cup thermal carafe. All stainless carafe, so no glass to break. Uses the Melita cone-shaped filters (#4). Makes great coffee, and the last cup is just about as hot as the first, and tastes just as fresh.
