Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Bunn coffee makers all heat the pot from the bottom? I'm much more fond of brewing into a thermal carafe so the coffee isn't heated after it's brewed.

Maybe that's just me.

Bunn's do have the heater at the bottom too.  The heater that I thought was going out was the water reservoir heater.  When you put in the cold water, it forces out the hot water and that is how you get hot coffee in 3 minutes.  The cold water then heats up in the reservoir.  A pot of coffee doesn't last longer than an hour at my house. actually Bunns store 12 cups of hot water in a reserve tank. to make coffee you just add what you want for that pot and it uses the hot in reserve and replaces with the cold you just added. That is why it is so quick. it does have a hot plate but that is just to keep it hot.

For those of you who like your coffee to continue to be cooked after it is made, by all means, fire up your bunns.

As for me, once the heated water is released to come in contact with the coffee grounds, that's the last heat I want to see applied to it. I'll keep mine hot in a thermos, thank you very much.

We have a Cuisinart, 12-cup thermal carafe. All stainless carafe, so no glass to break. Uses the Melita cone-shaped filters (#4). Makes great coffee, and the last cup is just about as hot as the first, and tastes just as fresh.

We use a 12-cup Cuisinart too.  I just turn the hot plate temp down as low as it can go.  Once it's done brewing I immediatedly dump what doesn't go into my cup in to a thermal carafe.

I bought the same machine for two of my kids.  I swear by them.

There's this crazy flippy sortof thing on the side of the Bunn.  If ya push it it kinda goes flip and a leetle light comes on.  If ya push it back the light goes out.  If ya leave it  with the light off I am assuming the hotplate stays cold. I've never experimented with it though. One pot =two cups around here.  Does this help ya Brew?

Not that I was needing any help....I'll just be keeping my Cuisinart, and you'll be keeping your Bunn, and Jeannie will be eliminating the plastic taste from her coffee maker.

Whenever the world has better coffee, we're all enriched. Therefore, never send to know for whom the Bunn toils; it toils for thee.

Brew, do you have a coffee grinder?  If so, I'll have my coffee snob hubby send you some of his fresh roasted (he roasts his own) and then I'll ask Santa to put a french press on your Christmas list.

The freshest coffee in the world is what we drink every weekend.  Clark roasts it Friday evening, allowing the oils to settle over night, then grinds it and boils the kettle then adds the boiling water to the fresh roasted fresh ground beans and runs it through the french press.

Now that's spoiled.

The rest of the time we use the Bunn.  The hot water reservoir is what keeps the coffee hot - the hot plate never comes into play in our house.

In the industry of coffee houses, Bunn has a reputation for being one of the best coffee makers there are.  What people do to the coffee after they make it is what separates a decent coffee house from a great coffee house.  It's really sad to see a place that keeps their brew heated instead of properly insulated, and even air pots can destroy flavor (which is why you see many more gravity-fed systems now).  Brewing coffee isn't an art (selecting and roasting the beans is!).  Brewing coffee is a science with predictable results, and predictable consequences for not following proper procedures.

I'd be happy to have a Bunn, but I'm partial to espresso, so I have the Jura S9 Impresssa.  One button goodness.

Coffee commonsewer here.

I never keep the heat on but use the microwave when I want it hot. It doesn't get "old" that way.

Yes we have a coffee grinder and save the French Press wish for someone else.  We've had several over the years and have disliked them all.

I can vouch for that.   Wink

I use vinegar too, but I was just thinking..

for those that hate the smell in the kitchen from the vinegar, I wonder if using baking soda through the pot work work as well.

I was considering the Caraf Style maker once I'm better situated financially.  That way, what I don't drink at home I can bring to work with me at the strength I like it to be.  But Dyl called earlier today to let me know that the Microwave went to hell, so that will be first on my list of must purchase items.

It was 17 years old...it gave me plenty of good years of service.

Just wondering when my TV that is 22 years old plans to give up the ghost.   Undecided
