Sumavel - new Imitrex inj - without the needle
Feb 2nd, 2010 at 6:10pm

Hello fellow clusterheads,

My doctor told me today about a new version of the injectable Imitrex called "Sumavel" now on the market. Apparently it works by using a high pressure nitrogen blast to inject the 6mg Imitrex, instead of a needle (called DosePro). She says it is less unpleasant to use.

My guess it that it is also more expensive, and it doesn't appear to allow the use of our "trick" to split doses because each injection is mated with the delivery system.

Just wanted to make you aware this new version is available, especially for those who really hate needles. And I would be curious on what people think. I haven't tried it nor costed it. It may only be available in the US, not sure. And no I'm not associated with them.

Cheers

I looked this drug up on my insurance company website- they don't even cover it. I got a message that the dosage amount I selected (in the area where I can search for Rx drug cost) exceeded the $1500.00 max allowable charge for this drug.  I am guessing that it is very expensive and that most insurances aren't covering it right now.  But when they do I am all for it. I hate having to do injections and will suffer instead of taking them at times.

I'll stick with the "Imitrix Tip" since I only use 2mg worth of the 6mg injection.  I get 3 shots out of 1.  No need to use more unless it's needed.  I'm trying to avoid rebound headaches too.

I'd be pretty interested if they were to make some 1/2 dose versions at half the cost of the current type of needle injectables. Won't hold my breath though!  Cheesy

Injecting "Imitrex tip" style in the belly has become so easy and relatively painless for me though that the needle factor has ceased to be an issue.

Hey didn't Dr. McCoy on the original Star Trek have needle-less injections like these?? The future has arrived!! Now give us those jet packs and hover cars we were promised, dangit! That'd be cool if these needle-less nitro injectors made the same shhh noise as Dr. McCoy's did. Am I even remembering his name right?

CH according to Bejeeber:

Strictly relying on doctors for CH treatment is often a prescription that will keep you in a whole lot of PAIN. Doctors are WAY behind in many respects, and they are usually completely unaware of the benefits of high flow 100% O2.

There are lots of effective treatments documented at this site. Take matters into your own hands, learn as much as you can here and at clusterbusters.com, put it into practice, then tell this CH beast Jeebs said hello right before you bash him so hard with a swift uppercut knockout punch that his stupid horns go flinging right off.

Just went to my new neuro appointment and he gave me 2 of these new fangled needleless injectors. Guess they're free samples from the company to get me hooked? Wink They come individually paked in these cool little leather zipper cases!

Maxalt and Maxalt-MLT have been around for a relatively long time (over 10 years, I believe). It works great for some of us, myself included.

That's good to know. The last couple of go rounds nobody knew nothing and I got through it with ice packs and not much more ( well maybe a couple of trips to the ER ). Something must have changed though 'cause even the Doc yesterday talked to me about O2. She heard it from another patient, so there must be at least a couple of us clusterheads here. Now I just gotta' find em.

The discomfort from the injection is like a kettle drum beginning of a beautiful overture for me. Wouldn't seem proper without it.

I just got a demonstration model of this and I expect I will have a few samples in the next few days.  Unfortunately these are single use and will remain super expensive.  Too bad the cant make it a refillable item like trex inj and with 1/3 doses for CH patients.

I have the lit that goes with it and it should actually give relief in a similar time frame as Trex inj.

As for Maxalt MLT, it has been the best triptan for me.  I still have some sample for travel and when O2 doesnt do it.
