Baby covered with feces wanders onto W-B street

MATT HUGHES mhughes@timesleader.com

WILKES-BARRE – An 18-month-old was found covered in feces and wandering in and out of a street Thursday, city police said.

Police said they responded to a call of an unattended baby in the street on East Lafayette Place, in the Lafayette Gardens apartment complex, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. They found the child naked from the waist down and covered in excrement, police said.

Police located the child’s father, a resident of Lafayette Gardens, in his apartment. He was sleeping, police said. They also contacted the child’s mother, who was at work at the time.

Police took the child to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for a health examination then turned the child over to Luzerne County Children and Youth Services. Police have not filed charges in the case, as the investigation has been turned over to Children and Youth.

Children and Youth could not be reached for comment after hours Thursday.

Hey Ginger. Many years ago, my wife and I decided to increase our family and became Foster parents. The children who came to us, and the conditions under which they came, were heartbreaking. I have no doubt we did bring some good and some light into their lives, but still...it gives one reason to cry. While I was teaching in the public school system, I ran across a quote from an educator that became my motto then and now: be kind to the children, they've had a pretty lousy day. I try and make someone's day less lousy every day. Especially the kiddos. God bless. lance

Sounds like bad judgement on the parents part.  The 18 mon. old was probably covered in feces from a dirty diaper and the father should have either #1, stayed awake and #2, had the home secured.

He is lucky the child was not injured, dead or stolen!
