What are your plans for Thanksgiving?
Nov 16th, 2010 at 3:00pm

I always enjoy reading what others are doing, where they're going, what they're eating, etc.

Going to grandmas house?  just the two of you?  A houseful of people to cook for?  Turkey or something else?

We're  driving to New Orleans for several days and having   Fili (sp)Gumbo instead of Turkey this year,  walking the French Quarter listening to jazz and staying at a B&B.  I LOVE old cemetaries so we'll be hitting some of them also.

Be sure to bring your asbestos diapers.

We're having Gramma over, so it'll be 5 of us. Small traditional Thanksgiving meal (white meat only). Maybe a few cocktails, and some sans-a-belt pie pants.

Thanksgiving day we have Christy's family at our house. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, my extended family takes over a retreat camp up in the mountains for a weekend of singing, playing guitars, eating, drinking, sports, board and card games, and getting back in touch. Hoping for close to a hundred this year!

Well, since I don't want to be around my brother-in-law's psycho wife and my Grandma won't be around forever, I'm making dinner here. Smiley  Besides us and Grandma, our neighbors will be coming to since they have nowhere to go this year (they were going to go out to eat!  I don't think so!).

Jesse will be deep frying an 18lb turkey which will free me up for making other nummers like green bean casserole, pumpkin & sweet potato pies, potatoes, corn, canned cranberry relish, stuffing and God knows what else! Roll Eyes

He meant JrBrew's gramma, who is actually my Aunt, but has functioned as a gramma all his life (and of course we're including his sweetie of a girlfriend!).  All the traditional foods like Melissa's making with lots of leftovers for the weekend.  We don't do black friday EVER, but Jrbew's coffeehouse opens at 4:30 am that Friday for door-buster specials on coffee before the shoppers head out.  He's scheduled to work . . . . hee hee hee hee

To gain about 10lbs  Cool

It'll just be the usual suspect: me, ma, 9 out of our 10 kids, 2 or 3 significant others.  Plus three hopeful dogs laying under the table.  Others will show up throughout the day for desserts and coffee.

Pickings:
4 Cheese Balls - private recipe served with wheatthins Cool
Celery w/cream cheese and olives

Main meal: 2 18lb Turkeys, Butternut Squash, Potatoes, French Meat Stuffing, Bread Stuffing, Asparagus, Cranberry Sauceand Cresent rolls for miles.

New dessert being trialed this year: Ginger snap Trifle: Ginger Snap Cookies, Whipped Cream, Vanilla Pudding w/Pumpkin Spice and Heath Bar Bits sprinkled on top.

2 Lemon Meringue pies
2 Pumpkin pies
2 Apple pies
Mississippi Mud: Walnut crust topped with a layer of whipped cream, confectioners sugar and cream cheese topped with a layer of chocolate pudding and topped once more with Cool Whip and shaved choclate.

Dennis, my blood sugar went up 20 points reading your menu!

We'll be going to by brother's.  He is the assistant director of a youth camp in IA, and we get the camp for the weekend.  Mom and Dad will be there along with at least 5 of us six kids and most of the grand kids with their spouses and some of the great-grandkids.  Three my neices and nephews can't make it, so the count is going to be down this year, probably about 40.

This one will be kind of bittersweet as my Dad lost his oldest (and last remaining) brother, his wife, and my Dad's sister this year.  They normally would have been with us.  They'll be missed, but we have a good close knit family and will have a good time sharing what God has done in our families over the last year.

This is also the first year Dad isn't doing the turkey and ham.  Life goes on, but it is hard watching some of these things happening.  I'm just glad we still have him and Mom with us.  We are totally blessed.

I wish for each of you a peaceful, pain free Thanksgiving.  We've all been blessed.

Jerry

Thursday will be just the kids and I.  Bone in roasted Turkey breast, wild rice stuffing with gravy, Corn and green beans, loaf of crusty bread and iced pumpkin fritter.

Saturday, many of my "kids by other mothers" will be coming over, and there will be a full roasted Turkey, onion soup roasted potatoes, baby carrots, green beans, crusty breads, gravy with seasoned rice peloff, another iced pumpkin fritter, and a cherry pie.

Visit my relatives, play with my neice, two pretty dumb dogs to keep happy, eat Swedish Bond Ost cheese and guzzle Labbatts or eggnog.

I get a lot of neat stuff to take home in Tupperware too. I love this time of year.

Going to my sister-in-laws' house.  Jimbo will be frying the turkey (sis does the ham).  I will be making the corn bread dressing, giblet gravy, possibly corn casserole and a pecan pie.

Linda,
That's *file*.  Be sure to take the Voodoo tour, it's worth it.  If you get a chance, go to the WW II museum, it's worth every penny.

Brew,

I guess I was speaking from personal experience more than anything. The creole gumbos I've had have been milder than the cajun gumbos, which in my experience have been pretty spicy. I know you understand that I live in Wisconsin, so my breadth of experience is still pretty shallow.

All that aside, I still prefer jambalaya with andouille.

The common thread in gumbo and jambalaya (for me) is that I need to stay relatively close to the men's room the next day. Grin

All the family going to our daughters house for dinner. Our son and his family are coming in from Oklahoma so we are pumped.

Friday, Ruth, our daughter and our daughter-in-law are heading to Evansville for Black Friday. They are planning on getting all their Christmas shopping done.

You would not catch me anywhere near there but they love it.

Having dinner with the tribe.  Blackfoot, Crow, Apache.  They don't like me, they don't like each other and they sure as heck don't like Thanksgiving. Last year  I sat across from Frank Littleboy  and the only thing he said to me was "Hey white guy.  Pass the salt."  Nothing has changed in thirty years.

Joe already responded but left all the details out!

Thurs - my sister and her boys + 1 gf, my brother, Patty, and then a friend of ours whose husband is presently on a ship somewhere far far away will come with her 2 munchkins. We refer to these two little ones (4 & 6) as our grandkids since our children have not begin having children yet. So a housefull for sure. We'll do the turkey/dressing, and probably a carrot/sweet potato puree that is outstanding. Am waiting to see what the girls want to do and will fill in the rest. My sister always does the pies, pumpkin and French Silk Chocolate. Up for debate this year is what kind of potato dish and green vegies.

Jeanette and Sean will spend THurs at his folks and then be down Friday morning, and the girls and I may do some black friday shopping although to be honest, I'm not sure I have the energy and since we're not planning to buy any big ticket items this year (the girls want gift cards) what's the point!

As Joe mentioned we head to camp Friday. It's a full on retreat camp with a huge industrial kitchen that allows all the cooks plenty of space and large ovens and such. We're bringing ham this year. I also promised my new "son" that I would make "Death by Chocolate" for dessert Friday night. Friday we bring our own meals or go to town for pizza. I think I'll do eggplan or lasagne. Saturday is the huge feast. Talk about 10 pounds Dennis - for sure when you have TWO thanksgiving dinners!

It's fun and nice to see all Joe's family. His brother from WA is coming, they don't make it every year but it's nice when they do. I don't spend the night at camp, it's only 20 minutes from home and my nice bed is way better than bunks with bathhouse up the trail. Wimpy, I know!
