VERY GOOD article......except for the wearing the oxygen overnight being especially effective. That has to be a misquote as that's not something that Dr. Rozen recommends

Ya, that wasn't a quote from Rozen and from the way it looks it could be information the writer found or that one of the other persons mentioned had given such as Lefkowitz or Gallagher given the placement in the article.

Wearing a non-rebreather mask overnight could be lethally effective in "curing" CHs as your oxygen cylinder will run out at some point and with the valves on the non-rebreather mask you'll suffocate.

Personally I think the article is terrible.

Not only is the oxygen info bad, but to quote a CMT (certified massage therapist) on what are good therapies, is NUTS.
Craniosacral and acupuncture are NOT good therapies and reads as an advertisement for chiropractor.
Then it quotes Rosen as stating cluster sufferers should see a neurosurgeon? Since he earlier mentioned surgery as a last option, I'll bet he said neurologist and not neurosurgeon. At least I would hope so.

I'm glad the author didn't interview a dentist and opthamologist.

Granted the article wasn't very well written or researched  (but then what can one expect from a relatively small town news paper.) but on the upside information on CH went out to the public at large which is a good thing, even if some of that information was misguided by the writer and some of the interviewees.

While I agree with you (Bob) that the following is poor,

"Oxygen dispensed through a face mask is also effective, especially when worn overnight. Although limited success has been recorded, alternative therapies may slightly alleviate symptoms.

Joanne M. Gallagher, CMT from Life Expression Wellness Center in Sugarloaf, said these types of therapies are “very important for the nervous system” and they are designed to “bring the body back into balance.”

“Craniosacral therapy and acupuncture can be a benefit to the process of healing,” Gallagher said."

I think the rest makes up a good article.

then again if it is someone brand new or not well educated in general, it may be written in a way that one would focus on those areas = Treatment. With that I see that I do see your point

Thanks for sharing this, Ginger!

I agree with the thoughts that others have made re: oxygen and some of the research missing from the article, but overall I enjoyed it. Some good general info and the opportunity to bring CH info to the world at large is a good thing.

Thanks for posting!

Cheers -

I thought the description of CH was fairly well done.  The treatment side left a lot to be desired.  However, overall I think the article was positive simply because of the exposure factor.

I have a question for you clusterheads out there.  Is this statement 100% accurate "They are termed “cluster headache” when essentially three main conditions exist. (A) The headache is always on the same side of the face or temporal area; (B) the duration of pain severity; and (C) the number of occurrences each day."?

I do have several issues with the article, however, we don't really know what Dr. Rozen said.  The reporter could have paraphrased what he said or altered it somewhat (and that is the main reason I will NOT do interviews for a newspaper or any other written media).  I've given interviews before and what I said was not exactly what was written and it threw the intent of the article off.

I think the only part that I took issue with is "always on the same side of the face".  Especially since there are those who have had it change sides.
