Constant runny nose on cluster side?
Dec 8th, 2010 at 9:06pm

I recently started my first cycle in 4 years (about my average).  Has anyone else ever experienced a constantly drippy nose on their cluster side?  This is happening all day despite my medical regimen.  I feel like sticking a wick up that nostril (LOL).  Just curious.

PF Wishes,

Kris

During a hit, yes. In between? Not really. When I was getting hit 6+ times/day and it was hard to tell when a hit started, ended and another began my affected eye, ear and nose was constantly outta whack...maybe you've got an ipsilateral nasal congestion? A one sided cold? lance

I'm like Lance, I get the runny drippy during and shortly after an attack. Stops in between. I just finished a butt kicking head cold, one sided! The left nostril ran like a freaking faucet for a week!!!

Before getting to the end of the thread, I was going to say, "runs like a faucet," but Joe beat me to it.  I believe it is one of the diagnostic symptoms for CH and very common during attacks.  Jim

Going through 1/2 a box of tissues during a hit is 'almost' normal for me.  If I could find the off valve for the spicket I'd be happy.   Cheesy

I realise this thread is a bit old but I just wanted to revive the topic to get an idea of how many people experience a runny nose when they are in cycle but don't necessarily have a headache.

I often get a runny nose when I have a CH but at times I get an incessantly runny nose when I don't even have a headache. This can go all day and nothing will stop it. It may seem trivial compared to having a KIP 10 headache but it is incredibly annoying when your nose just continues to drip all day. I find it very distracting and hard to concentrate on things. It sometimes wakes me up during the night too. I have to buy the softest tissues I can find or my nose ends up red raw.

The only relief I can get is lying down or reclining in a chair in which case it is probably just running down the back of my throat rather than dripping out my nose. Gabapentin which reduces my headaches considerably seems to have no effect on preventing the runny nose. Imigran and Maxalt don't work. Hay fever medications don't help (eg anti-histamines, steroid nasal sprays), cold medications such as Sudafed or decongestant nasal spays do nothing.

I must have used at least 20 tissues while I have been typing this. Anyone tried shoving a tampon up their nose?

Certainly I get the runny nose between hits and have always believed it to be part of the CH parcel. Just as no-one will ever convince me that sneezles aren't right there in the same bumper deal.

What a bargain.

yep, during an attack, the eye thing and after its started, im forever blowing the nose to clear it during the hit, disappears after the attack.
the worst symptom for me, asides from the cluster itself, is the heat coming off the top of my head.  my wife was horrified when I told her to put her hand above my head, about an inch away,  its like opening an oven door  !!!
guess we all have different symptoms.

I could write the exact same description about my CHs, with my nose (just the CH side) running like a small stream, which probably doesn't look too good but then all I care about at the time is trying to kill the CH.

I also get that drip, drip, run, drip thing. I take a Benadryl to stop it. I know, Benadryl is for allergies and a clusters are not an allergy but it does dry up the nose.
blacklab said "the heat coming off the top of my head". I also feel that. The nerves on the top of my skull get sensitive, kinda like my hair hurts. I use an ice pack during the badder attacks and it feels good to put the ice on my scalp.

Yep, it's all part and parcel of a CH attack.

I am actually wondering if I may have been getting the runny nose symptom even before I was aware I was getting CH. When I think back I can remember occasions when I would get an incredibly runny nose for no apparent reason.

Has anyone got any idea of the mechanism that causes runny nose with CH? I am certainly guessing that no one knows the mechanism behind runny nose when there is no headache symptom.

One thing I realised I haven't tried is ipratropium (Atrovent) nasal spray. Have just bought myself some so I can try it next time I get struck by an all day runny nose.

With 4-yrs between cycles and, sometimes, having dripping without a sign of a cluster developing, it's time to consider other sources of the dripping.

Possible a newly developing allergy or changes in your local environment which are irritating you nasal passages.

When I moved from N.C. to the DE/PA area I immediately starting daily, massive nasal drainage (which continues 10-yrs later). My doc's Dx: "95 crud". That is, I-95 runs thru the region and the pollution from the heavy traffic made this a common problem all along I-95.

Just suggesting that you you look more broadly for possible causes.

I've noticed that when I'm not having the attacks my left nostril stays slightly runny. Its not bad enough to keep tissues around unless I'm going in and out of the cold frequently. Of course, every single time I get a CH my left nostril stuffs up and runs really bad but that's to be expected.

When I first had clusters, and before my doctor or I knew anything about it or what it was, I told her I only ever got these pains when I had a cold. We realise now of course that I didn't have a cold at all, and the stuffed up and runny nose is a symptom of CH. If she ever gets another patient who presents with the same symptoms, at least she'll know what to look for, and it may save them years of suffering.

Thanks for the replies. It is interesting to note that others have experienced the runny nose symptom even when they don't have a headache.

My neuro was certainly of the opinion that it was part of the condition, as did I, but it is nice the hear from other CHers that they too at times get the runny nose only, or extending well after the headache has gone..

It's funny how reassuring it can be just to hear that you're not alone!! Love this board.
