My first Experience
Jul 14th, 2011 at 12:40am

I was having a nightmare about a giant scorpion that stung me right on my head, the horror woke me instantly and I had this throbbing pain that would come and go and with each cycle it would get worse and worse.  The worse it got the harder it got to stand, so I sat.  Sitting there wasn't helping because I couldn't keep still.  I tried going back to my bed.  I couldn't go back to sleep and found myself curling my knees into my chest face down holding my head.  The pain was so intense that I dug my fingernails into the wall and tore my bedsheets from my bed.  It lasted for about 30 mins, but over the 30 minutes they seem to get worse and worse, peak and them get less and less painful.  At the end the relief was a burning pain in the back of my on the right side.  The pain during the whole ordeal was focused on the right side of my head, my nostril would swell and run, my right eye would swell and leak.  Trying to walk from the couch where I was sitting I was stumbling and holding onto the walls to keep from falling to make it back to my bed.  The next day, the same thing but I just happen to awake when it struck instead of being asleep.  It happened around 10:05 pm and ever since then they happened at 10:05 pm.  But a a few weeks later they were hitting earlier in the day. Starting at 3pm, then 7pm the the last, most dreaded, worst and longest lasting at 10:05 pm.  They happen at the same time every year.  They now start where I get 1 a week and they increase exponentially to 3 times a day then start to go away exponentially and then just stop completely.  Then I have the next year to look forward to.  During my episodes I sometimes thrive around on the ground and grab anything nearby to dig my fingernails into whatever i grab and break nails, but that pain doesn't bother me until the headache is over.  I've tried tramadol, hydrocodone, depakote, lithium, xanex, and barbitutal? Barb was the first and I can't remember the name of it.  What should I ask for on my next appointment as they are starting up again and I don't know if I can take another round.  Someone please help me.

Hi there.

None of the meds you have listed are recommended for CH.  You really should try and make an appointment with a headache specialist and get a firm diagnosis so you can work on an effective treatment plan.  You can find one in your area by clicking on this link Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.

Medications for CH fall into two catergories abortive and preventative.  Preventatives include Verapamil, Lithium, Topamax.  Abortives include Imitrex, Zomig, Oxygen.

The best advice I can give you is to read this site and educate yourself.  Make sure to read the tabs to the left, especially the O2 tab.

Thanks flippertips.  I look for a headache specialist.  The o2 thing has been tried and i've done the research on the herbals and they just don't seem to work.  Thanks for the info I really do appreciate it.

It's really no problem at all.  I just want you to find a great doc that can work with you to get you some relief.

My hubby and many of the others here have been through many doctors and lots and lots of different meds.  It's frustrating to say the least.

I know I said it before, but just keep reading around here and make some notes of things that you haven't tried, but would like to.  You never know what may help.

Hang in there...we're here for you.

Have to ask HOW you tried the 02?  Many have come here with 02 "failure", to later find out they had too low flow-rate, wrong mask (or worse, nasal canula).  When used with right set-up, works for 80% of us
