Greetings

I've learned a lot by lurking. Maybe interacting will yield even more results!

The truth is the I'm in a world of hurt. Getting 1/2 "hits" a day for weeks now. It's never been this bad and I'm both mentally and physically exhausted from it. My dog keeps his distance.

Those that wake me are the worst because the pain has crossed the thresh-hold and Sumatriptan takes 1-2 hours to kick-in while I agonize... but you know how that goes.

But there is hope on the horizon! Been reading this site and persuaded my doc to prescribe O2 two-days ago. My tanks, regulator and non-rebreather mask arrived today. If the O2 works I'll invest in a an Allied LSP demand valve and cuffed mask. Crossing my fingers.

Are you using the tablet form of sumitriptan? The injections should take only a few minutes to take effect whilst for the tablets it is normally about 20 minutes.

Since you're talking about 1-2 hours, it could be that the CH is ending of its own accord without the sumitriptan taking effect.

Tell us more about this and we might be able to make sense of it.

Hope you get the oxygen working for you. It really makes a massive difference being able to kill off a CH in a few minutes saving a whole load of pain.

Mike,

I take the 100 mg tablet Sumatriptran. If I catch the hit at the onset it takes 20-40 minutes to abort the CH. If I wait too long or a well developed CH awakens me - it takes much longer for the pills to work.

I took injections before the pills were available and remember the quick relieve they brought, and the pain of the injection itself. That was 17 years ago. I may go back to that if the oxygen doesn't pan out.

Did not have a CH last night, so I don't know about the effectiveness of the oxygen yet... not that I'm complaining.

Hey GIH,

Welcome to CH.com.  You've come to the right place...

Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a paper on oxygen therapy at flow rates that support hyperventilation...  It works!

You also should see your PCP for a lab test for 25(OH)D.  That's the serum level metabolite of vitamin D3 that's used to measure it's status...  The normal reference range for 25(OH)D is 30 to 100 ng/mL...

The odds are you're vitamin D3 deficient and that deficiency is contributing to your cluster headaches.

The anti-inflammatory regimen with 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3 is 80% effective in preventing cluster headache...  If you're interested you can find the "How To" or "How do I" info at the following link:

You love lots of things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, that’s as lovely as a great airplane. If it's a beautiful fighter, your heart will be ever there
