I'm a 23-year sufferer of episodic CH. The last 6+ years have been more like hit and run episodes, as CH seems to be fading in cycle durations, as well as actual hits, and cycle frequency. I will say that during a period of 3-1/2 years being tobacco/nicotine free, my CH did not change at all...still had 3-4 month cycles, hard-hitting CH of 3-4 hours, 3 times daily, and a minimum of 2 cycles annually, sometimes 3. I smoked for the better part of 30 years and my CH started about 13 years after I started smoking.
I have been using ecigs for over 2 years non-stop now (total of over 3 years), but my cycles and CH are too chaotic and unpredictable to determine if there is any correlation, as I was still smoking (1+ packs/day) when my CH began to diminish. I still get a few wicked hits of Kip 8-10, lasting several hours, but things have been so different from the first 17 years.
If for no other reason than to be able to breathe more easily, reduce/kill that nagging dry cough, clear your lungs, have the return of smell and taste acuity, and a healthier appetite, ecigs can change your life...they have for me, and many, many others.
PM me for my recommendations on brand/type...I'll ask you a bit about your situation, if you intend to use ecigs to quit nicotine intake and the habit, or as an alternative to tobacco, as myself. I've used 3 types, and am currently on one I think will work best for me. You can go through a lot of inferior, over-priced, over-rated brands, not to mention all the trial and error in finding out which type will really suit your needs just to find what works for you, so your time and money investments will become an issue quickly. I can help you avoid that. BTW, I spend about 1/5 on ecig supplies compared to what I would if I'd still be smoking. The starter kits aren't expensive, either...around 40-60 bucks for the brand I've been using for the past 9 months, with no major component failures to date. I'm still chemically dependent on nicotine, but that's my choice...you can go nicotine-free and still use them if that's what you want, and you can step-down the nicotine level, if you want to, until you decide you just don't want or need it anymore...either way is a win for you. I started buying from an area vender who just started selling about a year ago...he researched everything to do with ecigs for several years before he began tossing the idea of selling them, and he knows what he's doing. Now they have a website up and running for sales...I only wish he'd been in the business much sooner.
Hope to hear from you! I'd be glad to hear of another ex-smoker walking this planet.
