Getting O2 in the USA as a foreigner
Jun 25th, 2014 at 3:14pm

Hi all!

I've started thinking about travelling to the USA for a long period of time to study a degree but the first thing I need to check off my list is the possibility of having oxigen there. I'm from Spain and here I can get it from the public health care for free. What would be the best and cheapest option for me? I think I'll have to get an insurance that includes it. But what is it? How does it appear in the insurance policy? Then, the first thing upon arrival is talking to a doctor (neurologist) who can prescribe it and convince him. Is that right? Can I speak directly with the insurance company to explain that I need the oxygen and get it without doctor intervention? Thank you!

You can get medical O2 in the USA, which requires a prescription from a doctor... or you can get industrial O2 (often called 'welding' O2) which does not require a prescription.
You don't necessarily have to have insurance to get medical O2, but it is probably cheaper if you do. Many insurance companies cover O2 as "durable medical equipment" (DME). I have had Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna and HealthNet which covered it. O2, regulator and mask are usually delivered wherever you need it.
Some people use industrial O2, which is the same as medical O2. It does not require a prescription, but is not approved for medical use, so you cannot tell the provider what you are really using it for (tell them its for your fish aquariums or for welding if they ask). The down side of this is they usually don't deliver, and you need to buy your own regulator and mask.

If you are trying to cope with a busy academic schedule you know that you will be away from your living quarters much of the time. Not very convenient if you need oxygen.

Suggest you consider using a more convenient  form of abortive to use when on the move. That doesn't prevent you from also having oxygen in you living quarters.

For Cluster, injection Imitrex is clearly excellent but you migh consider the folloiwing, pill which is almost as fast acting as Imitrex, less expensive, too. Pill also avoids any public exposure around use of a needle.

Olanzapine as an Abortive Agent for Cluster Headache.

Rozen TD.
Department of Neurology, Jefferson Headache Center/Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate olanzapine as a cluster headache abortive agent in an open-label trial. BACKGROUND: Cluster headache is the most painful headache syndrome known. There are very few recognized abortive therapies for cluster headache and fewer for patients who have contraindications to vasoconstrictive drugs. METHODS: Olanzapine was given as an abortive agent to five patients with cluster headache in an open-label trial. THE INITIAL OLANZAPINE DOSE WAS 5 MG, AND THE DOSE WAS INCREASED TO 10 MG IF THERE WAS NO PAIN RELIEF. THE DOSAGE WAS DECREASED TO 2.5 MG IF THE 5-MG DOSE WAS EFFECTIVE BUT CAUSED ADVERSE EFFECTS. To be included in the study, each patient had to treat at least two attacks with either an effective dose or the highest tolerated dose. RESULTS: Five patients completed the investigation (four men, one woman; four with chronic cluster, one with episodic cluster). Olanzapine reduced cluster pain by at least 80% in four of five patients, and TWO PATIENTS BECAME HEADACHE-FREE AFTER TAKING THE DRUG. Olanzapine typically alleviated pain within 20 minutes after oral dosing and treatment response was consistent across multiple treated attacks. The only adverse event was sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: Olanzapine appears to be a good abortive agent for cluster headache. IT ALLEVIATES PAIN QUICKLY AND HAS A CONSISTENT RESPONSE ACROSS MULTIPLE TREATED ATTACKS. IT APPEARS TO WORK IN BOTH EPISODIC AND CHRONIC CLUSTER HEADACHE.

Olanzapine has a brand name of "Zyprexa" and is a antipsychotic. Don't be put off by this primary usage. Several of the drugs used to treat CH are cross over applications, that is, drugs approved by the FDA for one purpose which are found to be effective with unrelated conditions--BJ.

Regardless of what abortive you use, if you will be in a large college or university, they will have a medical service whlch can support you around prescriptons, and so on. Just bring a copy of you full medical record with you when you come here.

Hola Visperas,

Check out OXY-Travel.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

They have outlets throughout the US, Europe and pretty much worldwide to take care of people who need oxygen while on travel.  I've used them on travel in the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii and in Europe

A prescription from your doctor in Spain is all you should need to obtain oxygen through OXY-Travel in the US.  Be sure to tell them where in the US you will be staying as there may be areas without OXY-Travel coverage.

Take care and adios,

V/R, Batch

You love lots of things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, that’s as lovely as a great airplane. If it's a beautiful fighter, your heart will be ever there
