My story is very much like yours. I went from episodic to chronic, and have cycles of full strength headaches within the overall cycle of weaker ones (6 years). The mini-clusters (and the main one) always start at the same time of year, February.
My last mini-cluster ended after I was on prednisone for a week, then had the most awful day I can remember. After that, it quickly ended with only a couple of #10's over the next two weeks.
The only preventative which helps me is depakote. This mini-cycle I discovered that Imitrix nasal spray ends even the worst headaches within five minutes! I still can't believe it.
When the cluster within a cluster ended, the main cluster improved too. Right now I'm off all meds and trying to exercise and lose the weight I've gained over the years. The mini-clusters are really my main hope. I hope that someday when a mini-cluster ends, it will shock the body into ending the big one too.
