“Bittersalz” is called “Epsom salts” in English. It’s one hell of a purgative, with a taste that will make your tastebuds curl up and die. It also makes a fine footbath. When I was a little kid, around three to ten years old (1940-1950), it was even used to punish bad children. They were forced to drink it, the idea being that the children were being bad because they had become too full of shit and needed what was called “a good cleaning-out.“ Nowadays, American child psychologists consider forcing children to take any kind of purgative to be a form of child abuse. From Bittersalz experience , I can tell you that my own childhood would have been much easier, with more time spent playing and less time spent shitting, had child psychologists come to this conclusion *before* the war!
