The assumption I have is that they grey matter is indeed brain cells. A mutation probably, but I still am making an assumption.
As far as evolution working...it doesn't. Darwin himself didn't believe it. Read it. If he wrote his theory today with the current knowledge of genetic code he would have been given no credit at all. An unintelligent one celled organism hasn't the ability to seek anything. Each species of life has its own unique genetic code. An omeba will still be an omeba a billion years from now.
