I am with you on this thermostat analogy. If you have ever had a thermostat that did not work - in a car or elsewhere - it can be intermittent. Works for awhile, doesn't work, works, kick it - it works, blah, blah, blah.

So this hypothalamic "thermostat" could be sticking - and then getting unstuck based on a sort of randomness that we have no control over.
