Why does the pain during the middle-part an individual CH-attack seem to pulsate and modulate?

My sensation is that some of the pain is related to throbbing of the blood vessels. However, there seems to be another wave pattern, longer than the pulse rate. It is sort of like wind-blown waves on top of ocean swells. My question is about the "swell" and not the top surface wave.

Further, why does the pain come up from zero to full-force so quickly and release so quickly at the end?
