I haven't noticed these pain waves. I feel only unwavering, unrelenting agony. On the other hand, I do know exactly what you mean about clusters coming out of nowhere like being struck by a bolt of lightning and then suddenly ending like switching off a light. In fact, the sudden cessation is the only good (if you can use that word in the context of cluster pain) thing about cluster. It leaves me with a very pleasant endorphin high.
