Doxepin acts very much like amitiptyline. They block the reuptake of serotonin in the neurla synapses (when serotonin is released by a neuron, some of it is reabsorbed by the neuron that sent it out (reuptake), tricyclics attach to the reuptake sites. This stops the serotonin from being reabsorbed and keeps it in the synapse longer thus enhancing it's effects).
