Yes, I have encountered the pain or "shadow" of which you speak upon being suddenly scared or really stressed out. Sometimes, sudden fear or stress has actually promoted full-blown attacks. The full-blown attack usually occurs when I already have a "shadow" headache to begin with.
Although my neurologist is of the opinion that stress is not a trigger or even a factor for cluster, my personal experience would indicate that it definately plays a role.
