If the O2 hammered it in 5 minutes, I don't the exercise can improve on that. Without O2, just 1 minute of exercise followed by deep breathing, it normally took 7-10 minutes to abort the headache.
On the regulator, the thing you mentioned that looks like a bunch of little metal beads pushed to together is probably a filter.
