Carl,
I have suffered from nightmares as vivid as you describe, although not normally that violent, since I was in high school. The only thing that seems to clear them from my head is to talk about them alot during the course of the day. I tell anyone who will listen and the more I describe the dream the more distant it becomes, sometimes the details become less vivid and sometimes they never fade. I have dreams I can remember from my college days. But talking out loud about it is the only thing that seems to calm my nerves, don't ask my why. I've also trained myself to scream in my dreams to wake myself up. Something my Scott finds a tad disconcerting at times. There are books out there on controlling your dreams which if this is a regular problem for you might be worth a look. But do consider your meds too, they have powerful effects on us. Take care.
