Sounds like an easy way out for the anesthesiologist. Some meds are a real problem (verapamil, indocin, pain meds, etc.) but others should pose no problem. Imitrex for example is absorbed and eliminated from your system very quickly (short half life) ... a few days before and after should be sufficient. Others (ox2,SSRI's) should have no effect.
If you have been taking some medication for a while (eg. paxil, narcotics) quiting suddenly will hurt (an understatement!!). Most docs will ween you gradually.
I would give your doc a list of meds and insist he/she do the research. I am not an MD ... just my opinion.
