Jacque,
I assume you've taken the cluster quiz (see left)... and the pain lasts less than 3-4 hours, occurs sometimes several times per day, is always on one side, etc?
If so, it's probably clusters. You should get him a MRI which can rule out something more serious like anuerysm, tumor, or aquired brain injury.
Many of us here swear by Imitrex, Oxygen, Verapamil, Lithium, and other wonder drugs (see the drugs section to left).
Sounds like you need to put the doctor on the spot and make him tell you what it is if it isn't clusters... or find another doctor.
