Dear Todd:
To make this as straight foreward as possible, CH & TN occur due to some kind of damage (low or high level) to the 5th Cranial Nerve. More specifically speaking the Ophthalmic Branch, the Maxillary Branch, and the Mandibular Branch of the Trigeminal Nerve. In CH cases it appears that the focus is primarily centered to but not limited to the Ophthalmic Branch of the nerve. In my case I had damage to both the Ophthalmic & Maxillary Brances. Dr Graff-Radford at one time tried to redefine "Clusterheadache" as "Pre-Trigeminal Neuralgia" but was forced abandoned the "Pre-Trigeminal" terminology because the Health Insurance Companies refused to accept that name for an illness. Whatever the symptoms are and they are derived from a disfunctional Trigemial Nerve, it still is Trigemianl Neuralgia.
I hope this little piece of information is useful as to the misunderstanding of CH & TN.
Respectfully,
Rocky Frie
