Is there a scale for shadows?

I swear I've got shadows that are worse than some headaches I've had. Do we just refer to them as "light" and "heavy", like that, or is there some way to catogorize them? Also, if a shadow begins to piss me off, is it OK to try to kill it with something like Maxalt? I don't like the HA's at all, but when they do come, I can shoot 'em or something. The shadows,I have to put up with all day long it seems like. What can be done about shadows? Any suggestions?
