Calcium channel blockers (of which verapamil is one ) are not carcinogenic. They were in the news recently for another reason. Studies seemed to indicate that use of the short term types was associated ( a slight statistical correlation ) with a higher incidence of heart attack and stroke among people with congestive heart failure. These studies have been refuted by some other more recent ones. Most physicians now prescribe the long lasting version of verapamil as a result of these studies just to be prudent. The bottom line is this - verapamil is a very safe medicine in an otherwise healthy individual ( a person without congestive heart failure ). Sorry for the lecture but I have used this stuff with great succes for seferal years now and I don't take any medicine without knowing as much as I can about it.
