Bob- in case you are still reading this far down the list...thanks for the bd wishes! I felt "ok"... no full blown headache, but a small consistant one. I do believe I get both migraines and clusters. Migraines I had as a child, they stopped and started up again in my mid-twenties. The clusters are new to me, starting in Oct of 97, I was approaching 30. They were like the ones I had experienced as a child, except they "wouldn't stop!" (they would last for 2 hours, go away, come back, go away until I thought I was going in sane and I was a slobbering, pathetic wreck, convinced I was dying!), until I started on verapamil.. that seemed to slow them down, until they went away. As far as staying in bed, when I get one, I meditate. I visualize my brain, and the blood running through it. May sound hokey, but I can not move when I get one. I am definitly NOT sleeping, but in somewhat of a trance-like state. Any movement feels like death.
I do believe the ice-pik feeling (same as you described, but lasted for two days) was the sign of them stopping, I hven't had a big one since the sharp pains started and have since left. I am feeling like my self again.
It would be worth observing the next time you get them.
Hope you are doing well.
