In spite of all the uncertainty about clusters there are some things that we know for sure - one of them is that it is a true vascular headache - the pain comes from the dilation of the blood vessels after they have constricted - much of the abortive and preventative ( I was going to write prophylactic but unsure of the spelling ) medicine works on either preventing the constriction or the dilation.
It is just like a migraine in this respect - whether we like it or not - we all know that this fact can be used by some to trivialize clusters into migraine - clusters are different in just about alll other aspects.
