every file ends with an "extension" which tells what kind of file it is. If it ends in .doc it's a Word file, .xls is an Excel file, .pdf is an Acrobat file, etc. (no that's not a file extension).

A file that ends with .exe is an executable file. It's a computer program. When you open it the progam goes into action and does whatever it was written to do. Some virusus arrive in this format.

Some have double expensions. The Sir Cam that I received about 15 of the past few weeks came with a double extension of .doc.pfv. You can almost always bet these are viruses.
