Some of us use that instead of posting a message when the information pertains only to the individual, even though it might be on topic for this board. It certainly takes up less space than a full message, and if the info is controversial, it circumvents flaming. The notice is helpful for folks (like me) whose software is not configured to automatically check their mail server.
