Cold sores, shingles and herpes are all caused by the chicken pox virus. Anyone that has ever been exposed to chicken pox probably has the virus but that doesn't mean they will have any outbreaks.
Zovirax ( acyclovir) will take the sting out of cold sores and dry them up. It's a herpes med but works just as well on cold sores and the pain of shingles.
Every time I get a cold and have to blow my nose often I'll get the sores that rg mentions. Mine are not cold sores but look very much the same. Diprolene AF (betamethasone dipropionate) takes care of that quickly.
