From my personal experience taking it between, just prior to, or at the inception the episodes works best. I too have had problems at peak cycle. I could have done some more personal research but frankly I'd rather never go through that shit again!!!
I am also concerned about that pred stops the beneficial action of the shrooms although it certainly doesn't stop the trip.
Looking through my records I have found a high incidence of failures with pred present, but even more significantly not a single success with pred present.
