Good Books anyone?? Non CH
« on: Dec 4th, 2003, 5:09pm »

I thought this might be a good way for me to find new good books to read. I always have a rotten time looking for a new GOOD book. I am reading a great book at the moment. "The Runaway Jury" by John Grisham. But I need some books to take on my Christmas vacation.
So start telling me what your favorite books are. I hate romance novels by the way.

Oh Jayne, we should talk.  I love to read!  One of my favorite authors is Lawrence Sanders.  I will read anything he has written.

May be hard to find, and is kinda strange/deep.  Definately not romance.  I was forced to read it in college English.  I do mean forced cause I hate to read books, unless it is just to find information.

Anyway, I have remembered it all these years cause it really captured my attention and I coulndn't wait to find out what happened at the end.

Title: Woman in the Dune
Author: Kobo Abe'   (pronounced Ah-bee)

It's the only book I know.

I am currently reading The Great Train Robbery by Michael Crichton.  Anything by Dickens is great.  I personally love the classics and fantasy.  Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind and George R. R. Martin are some of the best.

I like mystery and horror.  Do not like romance at all.  Well at least not to read  Roll Eyes

Alice Hoffman is the only I read that is well, female!  She wrote Practical Magic.  I love books, movies or anything with a little mystical junk in them.

Lawrence Sanders:  He wrote The Deadly Sin series.  There are 7 in the whole set.  They don't really intertwine though, so you don't have to read them all.  They are good mysteries.  He also has the McNally series, which are mysteries, but they are funny.

Hey Jayne,

Non fiction "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight" by Alexandra Fuller.  She was born in England, 1969.  Her family moved when she was a baby to Africa where her father joined the white government to fight in the Rhodesian Civil War.  Good read. Smiley

Most anything by John Irving

I have a big fat book I bought once cause it had a pretty picture on the front, with sort of a magical/mystical look, maybe a dragon.  I had every intention of reading it.....one day.  15 years later....
untouched, I could send it to you if you want!

well this is great but if we could all stick to Titles and authors then I can make a list and go to the book shop and pour over them...this could be good for others that are in need of a good read too.

Lawrence Sanders:  McNally's Luck, McNally's Folly - there are quite a few more.  Light reading, mystery, and funny.  Also any of the Deadly Sins are good mysteries.

Alice Hoffman - read Practical Magic, the book is much better than the movie.

I don't know who wrote Primal Fear but it was a great book.  Movie was good too.  Anyway there are 2 more books that follow Primal Fear and complete the series.

One of the books I have been reading lately has all of the required characteristics of a "must-read"...

- a real page-turner
- believable down-to-earth characters you can really relate with
- mystery
- drama
- comedy
- satire
- fantasy
- destined to be one of those classics that can't be limited to one book --- the author will probably write the sequel or maybe even a trilogy

Oh man, wish you guys had started this thread back in Aug. before I moved hehe.  We gave away 3 boxes of books, many John Grisham, Lillian Jackson Braun and Lawrence Sanders, in fact I had all John Grishams books and all the McNally series from Sanders.  We just gave them away  Undecided

I still have a whole extra book case of books though, so if anyone is need of reading material, say the word and we'll start shipping! hehe.

Jayne-

I LOVE to read too!  Just finished reading Lovely Bones.  Can't remember who the author is but I'm sure it will be easy to find because it's real popular right now.  It's different from any book you've ever read.  It's told in the first person from the perspective of a 14 year old girl who has been murdered.  She is telling her story from heaven as she watches her family & friends go on without her.
It's REALLY good!

The Davinci Code, and Angels and Demons.  Dan Brown was the author, I believe.

The Devil's Dictionary  Ambrose Bierce.

Anyone of the Flashman books by George MacDonald Fraser. Tom Brown finally loses.

If you are feeling somewhat Italian, Ottorino Respighi is especially lyrical. His Ancient Airs and Dances is especially delightful.
