Informal CH Survey
« on: Oct 21st, 2004, 11:58am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify Remove Remove

After spending so much time hear reading posts, I've come to the conclusion that CH's has to be the most mixed up confusing illness known to mankind. Just for the heck of it, I wanted to do an informal survey to try to make some since of it all.  laugh

I named four types of us Clusterheads. If your interested just post which Clusterhead most resembles YOU.

A. SEASODIC: PF periods for 7-10 months a year followed by a 3-4 month cycle of torture. On only rare occasions does PF time last more than 9 months.

B. SPARSODIC: PF periods than normally average more than 12 months at a time followed by 2-3 month cycle of torture.

C. SPARCHRONIC: No PF time throughout a year with no pattern type peaks of KIP6 & above. Just random attacks whenever and no rhyme or reason to when they increase in intensity.

D. EPICHRONIC: No PF time throughout the year with somewhat specific patterns that cycle to KIP6 and above for weeks then return to having lower KIP attacks. Usually your cycles with the chronic period last for more than 5 weeks before returning to lower KIP attacks.

Now that you have chosen your specific type of Clusterhead you are, list which numbers you can say YES to from the questions below. Obviously some can be a sometimes answer, but only answer YES if it fits you more often than not. These questions refer to a CH as a KIP6 and above only.

1. Do triptans work to abort your CH's ?
2. Do prevents prevent you from getting CH's ?
3. Can you lay down during a CH ?
4. Do your CH's last more than 2 1/2 hours ?
5. Does eating healthy/dieting prevent your CH's ?
6. Does alcohol trigger a CH ?
7. Do you smoke cigarettes ?
8. Have you ever had a head trauma ?
9. Does 02 abort your CH's ?
10. Does alternatives, i.e., Red Bull, Capsicum spray, Migraine Excederine, Excersize (not just help, but) ABORT a CH ?

Example way to answer the questions: C-1,6,9

A - definitely. And typically spring and fall although by some miracle not every year.

1. Occassionally
2. Don't get them year-round, they follow a pattern not that I'm on Verapamil.
3. Sometimes. But it is hard to remain motionless. Usually doing a little dance in bed or rocking back and forth. I try to relax as much as possible and go to a "pain free place" to get away from it.
4. No
5. No
6. No, but I don't drink during my cycles because alcohol will elevate my pain from a constant K2 to around a 4.
7. Yes, but much less so during a cycle.
8. No.
9. Have not tried. But I do relish the fresh air and cold temps during an attack.
10. Occassionally.

C- 1, 6, 7, 9.

Very interesting thread BlueMeanie. I hope you don't mind me adding some notes:

1) Being chronic doesn't mean that you don't get no PF time at all throughout the year, it means that you didn't get more than 30 consecutive PF days during the last 12 months (according to IHS).

2) Personally i'm chronic and i'm seasonal as far as the frequency of my headaches is concerned- not the intensity. Maybe it's just me having this kind of fluctuation- just thought i should pinpoint it.

PFDAN to all,
Perry.

I R'dTFM, but ITSM that finer granularity is required.

A.   Seasodic--6 on, 6 off

1.  Never tried.
2.  If melatonin is a prevent, then apparently so, but it's too soon to make a definite statement.
3.  K7 or above, by definition, no.
4.  Spiking no; heavy shadow, sometimes.
5.  Avoiding MSG prevents the ha's that MSG trigger.
6.  Don't drink.
7.  Yes.
8.  No.
9.  Never tried.
10.  Walking seems to shorten; ibuprofen sometimes helps with shadows.

Now, if I'd followed the instructions precisely, my response would have been A-7, which seems to me to be virtually devoid of information.   Wink

OK - all this going back and forth to read the questions is giving me a headache!

However ...

Sparsodic - 3-4 years between cycles.

1. Yes - Imitrex injects
2. Yes, after about 10 days of pretty high doses
3. No - but a dark room for pacing or meditating is good
4. No
5. No
6. No
7. Yes
8. No
9. Don't know - never tried - love the Trex
10. Major caffeine like in cappacino or espresso will fend off a lower kip or heavy shadows - never a full blown sparsodic CH!

Great thread - are you going to present us with a bell curve of responses when done?
