Cluster Headaches?

Hi
I am new to all of this so please bear with me. For the last 8 months I have suffered chronic pain in my right eye(only in the middle of the night),whilst this is happening my eye seems to be streaming. The pain is unbearable, my eyeball feels like it is going to explode, I have to get up and pain seems to go after about an hour or 2, by which time I am wide awake and cannot return to bed.

My GP referred me to an eye specialist who could not find a problem with the eye but suggested that it could be a form of migraine, my GP has tried me on 2 lots of tablets, but they did not help at all. I had to go to my GP today and he thinks the problem could be Cluster Headaches and he has prescibed me SUMATRIPTAN 50mg,1 to be taken when the pain attack comes.

As I know absolutley nothing about Cluster Headaches I was wondering if my problem sounds familiar to any of you sufferers out there, and if so has anyone taken this medicine and does it work, if so how quickly should I notice the benefit of it? (not sure how I would know if it were the tablet working or the pain going naturally).

Sorry to be vague but not sure if i am on the right track or not. I would be most grateful for any help or advice you can give me.

Many thanks
Trevor

Imitirex or imigran, is sumatriptan, many people here use it.  And it works fairly well.  Welcome and read all that you can.  And what you are describing, does sound like ch to me, but, alas I am no doctor, sir.

Hi Trevor

Wendy the Brit here. Welcome and sorry you needed to find us.

Your symptoms do sound very much like CH, but ideally it would be good to get your GP to refer you to a neurologist who specialises in headache conditions for a confirmed diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

I expect the sumatriptan you have been given is in pill form as this is the cheapest. The pills are almost useless as they are too slow. You need to ask your GP to prescribe Imigran in either the nasal spray, or even better the injectible form as they are much faster. Even better would be to get him to give you oxygen therapy as well to try out as it helps 80% of sufferers.

If you didn't know there is a support site for UK sufferers and their supporters at OUCH UK, you can go via the OUCH link on your left or go to www.ouchuk.org and click on the Sufferer Support link. There you can get advice centred around the UK NHS system and its oddities. We have regular get togethers all over the country, and also have a telephone helpline where you can talk to another sufferer about treatments etc.
I won't post the number of here, but you can get it via the website or I can message it to you.

Talk to you soon

Wendy

Hi Trevor
Extremely sorry that you seem to have CH but welcome to the board a great place for info, advice and support! Can only echo what Wendy has said. The sumatripan pills take at least 35-45 mins to work if they work at all and who needs that extreme of pain for that long!! Sadly some of our GPs can be difficult at persuading to prescribe the right meds but you just have to keep at em. Hope you get some relief soon!!
