I had gone, like most everybody here, to the dentist, the ear-nose-throat doc and eye doc trying to find a cause for the pain. After zero results with the specialists my regular doctor handed me his Desk Reference and said "See if you can find what you have and let me know." I found the the old sterotype of women don't get clusters, square jaw, pockmarked skin, smoke to much, yada, yada, yada. I finally had a name. Didn't do me much good though. There was no mention of treatment and it said the pain would go away when I reached my 40's. Yeah, right. I was already in my 40's and it was getting worse. Maybe today's issue of the Doc's Desk Reference is more up-to-date. But, I doubt it.

I think it's fair to say.CH accompinied by depression and isolation will raise the risk for suicide. Going onto google there is a thread about this: http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=chspecific;a ction=print;num=1104654080 Versilleus related a story of one CH'er he knew who jumped. He also stated, "The Clusterbusters surveys show that 64.15% have contemplated suicide. 8.8% have actually attempted it." From what I have read those who can not find a way to control CH are most likely to choose suicide.

Actually my Neuro had a CH patient commit suicide. And to me that is bigger than anecdotal. I also remember last year someone posted a story about a doctor at a hospital that had his best friend (?) commit suicide from Clusters....ring a bell? It' gotta be in the archives somewhere... Ozzy

Lets say suicide is caused by depression. What caused the depression? In my case depression is caused by ch, when in cycle I don't want to associate with anyone, I don't go out, I have to force myself to spend time with the family or go to work. All I want to do is lay in a cold room and be left alone. I'm episodic and I can't even begin to understand how you chronics deal with it year round.

| Thats exactly what I posted in another thread, I hope that this cycle will end for me at the end of this month, it usually will not return until December (Hopefully Never)... I really do feel for all that have this year round... I know what I go through about 5 or 6 months of the year, I understand why people here are so quick to pull out the pokin STICKS, I have had enough in just a few months myself.. EX: Ali, Galaxy, Hidido, etc... PFDAN's to ALL !!!

| Gonna put some good ole fashioned Texas-style woop-a$$ on him? I will join you. It just really irks me when someone blows in to town with the latest "don't use this method/MUST try this" B.S. , making an erroneous assumption that everyone here knows squat about the condition. Since I am just episodic, I try to have more of an "I am not worthy" attitude around the chronics. I have never had triptans, but Re: the suicide for me, I have THOUGHT, on the way to the emergency room, "If I just run into the bridge, I will get knocked out and my head won't hurt anymore," and wanted to die rather than endure the pain. The last time I had one of only about 5 kip 10's I really thought of blowing my head off, it was just a fantasy of seeing a way to end the pain. I really am able to say to myself, that is the clusters talking, just like it's the beast, seperate from me, and I know it will end. I too, have the greatest sympathy for the chronics...whenever I wake up pain free, I pray for them. One thing I know about clusters, and it's even apparent from the surveys, nothing works for everyone. Further, with meds in general, nothing works for everyone. We all have a unique chemistry, personal circumstances and tolerance level for things. THAT is what makes someone knowledgeable, and an authority on something in my book---KNOWING YOURSELF through experience, and and trial and error, what triggered it, how did it differ from last time, what time of day was it, was it after a drink, etc. Even when I have a problem, ie: some issues with kudzu, it's MY problem, and I try to express it as a heads-up for others considering it, not me being their Mother, or me acting like the God/Goddess of Know it All. What's the pay off for Galaxy anyway? If this is a return engagement, isn't it apparent Clusterheads aren't dumba$$es? Not to mention to fact that the post is incoherent, like we are going to trust a blubbering illiterate as an authority. Go stick your head down a garbage disposal for a cluster-like experience, and take your "Miracle cure of the day" elsewhere.

In my case I was already being treated for depression over a period of 8 years, when the CH's started. The tablets had been working quite well but the headaches have aggrivated the situation immensley. As I'm chronic and get only very short PF periods I often feel I'd rather be dead than feel like this the rest of my life. The worst feeling is guilt over how it affects my partner and our life together. Now I'm not sure whether I should ask for stronger anti depressants or what. Bloody CH's cause a lot more problems than just the head pain. Cheers all, Jacqs

Geeze Jacqs, no emoticon for pained look of empathy. I really feel for you being chronic. I can't say "I understand", but I can relate to your comment about how it affects those around you. The most recent "wishing I were dead episode" when I went cold turkey off of everything to try kudzu, I recall thinking the thing that talks me back to reality, the thing that let's me know it's the clusters talking is my kids and husband, and then I too feel very selfish, that I would leave them to escape. Since I had a car wreck last year, I have had this horrific face pain and neck pain, on TOP of the CH lurking out of its cave lately at times other than my normal episode months. At least I don't have Chronic CH, but I am constantly in pain. But it's not the CH wish-I-were-dead-rather-than-this-pain that I just get sporadically. Like I said, even with my neck and face pain, I STILL thank GOD I am not chronic CH, and pray for anyone who is when I get a good night's sleep. I really wanted to tell my doctor how this is making me feel depressed, but I don't want to throw any MORE issues into the mix before I get ONE under control. I haven't worked since last February, I sometimes can't even think of words for things, and I am supposed to be taking some tests to get certified to teach. Hell, I couldn't even think of what a microscope was called the other night. At least diagnostics show my brain is not blowing up, it just feels like it some days. Has your doc every considered self hypnosis/relaxation tapes? I have very mild depression, where the side effects are not worth the treatment. When I get thinking of depression, and if something could trigger it, or contribute to it, CH and chronic on top of it would certainly have a reasonable connection. I use my self hypnosis tapes to destress at the end of the day. Another thing, you may need a stronger anti depressant, but what about just a different one. It IS crazy when you are trying to deal with more than one thing at a time, since you can't just focus on the ONE thing, the CH or the depression, you have to worry about interactions with treatments on top of it. I know this website does a world of good for me---it's like therapy, to let you know you are not alone, offer alternatives and advice, and plenty of Mama and Papa bears out there to beat off the boobs who want to sell you on some miracle cure. Wishing you the best, and more pain free days to come. I am sure your partner would not think the world was better without you, and hope the effects of CH can diminish over time, where you just have you lives together, instead of your lives with CH. PFdays. T.Ann
