Valium and Clusters

Hi All,
My heart goes out to all who suffer the beast.
I just got back from the hospital.  I went through a very tough one today.  My Neurologist is out on Vacation, and my Frova stopped working for me.  My doctor at the hospital gave me Valium to help the cluster.

I KNOW there have been other threads about Valium, but I fear I don’t have time before the next attack starts.
If any one has any thing to say about Valium and Clusters please let me know.

Thanks

Valium acts on the thalamus and hypothalamus so maybe your doctor thought since the haypothalmus is thought to be responsible for the cyclic nature of CH, maybe  Valium might help as a preventative.

But I don't think it is going to stop an attack once it has been started. No narcotic or opiod has ever worked for me. By the time the arteries in your head are dilated and your trigiminal nerve is on full alert, and no narcotic will stop the pain (except if you take enough it might knock you out so you don't feel it).

Valium may also be a trigger for me since it relaxes me. (But so is sleep and relaxing in general). Sometimes I can't take it at all ... it's just asking for trouble. I've never heard of Valium being used as a preventative (or abortive).

In my case while in cycle, I'm episodic, Valium and Xanax seemed to be a trigger for me. I tried taking these merely to be able to try and get a decent nights sleep. In my case, seemed to bring on the attacks. We're all different, others may have and I think have experienced better results.

I have taken valium or Xanax at times when I've reached the point where I can not calm myself down.

It will help with the anxiety of a severe attack which in turn may appear to alleviate some symptoms but it does not abort nor prevent mine.

Here is some research on Xanax. Though not valium there may be something to it.

Yeah, I have been interested in the xanax/benzodiazepine angle.  There has been some research that benzos reduce pain transmission in the trigeminal nerve. I wrote something about it:

Good luck
