It happens.. not that unusual.

Have you checked the medications page? A lot of us are getting relief from the D3 regimen .. might want to check it out..  Kiss

Welcome to the site. Sorry to hear you're getting attacked.
Have you been diagnosed by a qualified neurologist (a lot of neurologists are not qualified to diagnose cluster headaches)? Have you taken the cluster quiz? On the left side of your screen is a "cluster quiz" button. Try to quiz and let us know the results. Have you been prescribed any meds to help with the pain.

It is really weird when it happens on the "wrong" side but it just seems to be something that CH does on people from time to time, along with other changeable features like some preventives no longer working, doses needing changing, etc.

However if it still causes you concern, do discuss it with your doctor.

J Headache Pain. 2009 Aug;10(4):259-63. Epub 2009 Jun 3.
Lateralization in cluster headache: a Nordic multicenter study.

Meyer EL, Laurell K, Artto V, Bendtsen L, Linde M, Kallela M, Tronvik E, Zwart JA, Jensen RM, Hagen K.

Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Division of Neurology at Karolinska Insitutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

A slight predominance of cluster pain on the right side has been reported in several studies. The aim of this large retrospective Nordic multicenter study was to estimate the prevalence of right- and left-sided pain in cluster headache (CH) patients with side-locked pain, the prevalence of side shifts in episodic and chronic CH patients, and the occurrence of cranial autonomic symptoms related to pain side.

AMONG 383 CLUSTER PATIENTS, 55 (14%) HAD EXPERIENCED PAIN SIDE SHIFT. OF THE REMAINING 328 INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT SIDE SHIFT, THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE OCCURRENCE OF RIGHT-SIDED AND LEFT-SIDED PAIN (54 VS. 46%). THE PREVALENCE OF SIDE SHIFT WAS SIMILAR FOR EPISODIC AND CHRONIC CH AND THE OCCURRENCE OF CRANIAL AUTONOMIC SYMPTOMS WAS NOT INFLUENCED BY THE PAIN SIDE. In conclusion, previous reports of a side difference in location of cluster pain could not be confirmed in this large Nordic sample.

It's a lousy roll of the dice but it's also possible to suffer from more than one headache syndrome.

I can't recommend it.

Hey Icerobbo,

Look at the bright side of this phenomenon...  You're among the chose few who've become a Switch-Hitter...

Give the anti-inflammatory regimen a try...  I think you'll like the results... and it won't matter what side the beast tries to hit...

The following link has all you need... Start at page 1 and scroll down...

What preventive are you using? Have you got abortives to kill off your CHs?

Are you working with a headache specialist?

It makes a huge difference to the impact of CH on your life when you've got an effective preventive and abortives.

Tell us more about what you do to treat your CH and we can give you suggestions.

Unfortunately, things do change from time to time.
The up side is that sometimes they change for the better.
My cycle frequency went from 6 moths to 12 and now is right at 15 months.

As for friends and family, that is a really tough one.
It frustrates the hell out of my Wife when I get a hit.
She tries to help and I'm in so much pain that all I want her to do is go away.
(Just having someone try to talk to me during a hit is irritating.)
I have trouble telling her nicely, or speaking at all during a hit.
Anymore, I go to the most remote part of the house that I can and just pace / clutch the door frame until the tide subsides.
She has since not taken my snappy responses personally and knows to keep everyone away from me.

"The Letter" and open discussions with friends and family regarding CH is very helpful.
It removes any mystery around what you are going through and doing during a hit.
Even more important, it allows you to not be self conscious about what other think of you.
The last thing you need to be worried about during a hit is what does "so and so" think.
(Link to "The Letter" Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register)

During my first CH cycle, prior to being diagnosed, I was told that I was having sinus headaches from allergies.
We had some guests over for dinner and I started to get a hit while we were all sitting at the kitchen table.
I foolishly thought that I could sit there and tough it out.
The pain got so bad that in the middle of someone else's conversation,
I slammed my fist on the kitchen table and stormed off into the bedroom.
Not cool...
I had no idea what was happening to me and I can't imagine what our guests thought.

Hopefully you have access to a good abortive like O2 or Sumatriptan injections.
If so, do not wait to use them.
At the first sign of pressure behind me eye, I stab myself with an auto injector.

You are not alone and you have found a place where we know exactly what you are going through.
Hang in there, experiment with treatments / doctors until you find what works for you.
It appears that the pharmaceutical community is starting to pay attention to us and are working towards more effective treatment options.

Cheers,

Phil
