Nothing more than a small electro-chemical signal passed from neuron to neuron and translated in the brain. Makes sense that if you can train your brain to translate the signal into a different something, the pain no longer exists.
Ever seen the old rat experiments where they hook the electrodes up to areas in the rat's brain and every time the sucker pushes the right button he gets a shot of euphoria. Little dude is in constant orgasm, camping out on that button.
How do we redirect the pain signals to the euphoria area of the brain. Figure that one out and all of a sudden we're the luckiest people in the world (especially the chronics getting hit 8/day).
