Assigning a number to pain is pretty arbitrary and kind of silly since it is all so personal and subjective.

But my experience ( and aparently some others ) is that an individual unmedicated cluster attack is always about the same in intensity. For others there appears to be a wide range in intensity.

I believe those who say they have the variation. I also believe those who say they do not have the variation.

I would also suggest that there might even be sub-categories of clustering:

1) chronic
2) episodic with little or no variaion in intensity or duration of cycle
3) variable episodic - wide variation in both intensity and duration of cycle

What thinkest you?
